The Crucible– Abigail Motives
The seeds of the hysteria that affected Salem Town, Massachusetts were planted in January 1692 when a group of young girls started to show bizarre behavior, without any decorum whatsoever, and accused people of witchery. Abigail Williams, among the primary accusers in the Salem Witch Trials, begins her web of depend on a desperate attempt to not be held accountable for her dubious deeds in the forests the night before the play opens. The childish lady required attention and with each allegation that she did, the town enjoyed her and thought her more, which gave her more and more power.
In truth, Abigail continued with the hysteria in order retaliate on Elizabeth Proctor, so that she might have John Proctor for herself. The night before the play opens, Abigail had been dancing out in the woods, which is forbidden by the Puritan faith. Her primary function for entering into the woods was to cast a charm to eliminate Goody Proctor. She drank chicken blood and cast an appeal wishing to dispatch her mortal enemy, Elizabeth Proctor, all in the hopes of securing her current love, John Proctor, for her own.
While doing so, Reverend Samuel Parris and others learn about the dancing and about the spell-casting. As Mary Warren, the servant in the Proctor’s household, specified that “Witchery’s a hanging’ error”, Abigail got scared as a cat about to be run over by a vehicle. As a result, Abigail threatened all of her sweethearts that were dancing in addition to her to remain quiet in the hopes of avoiding being hanged. As Abigail is mulling her possible death at the end of the noose, Tituba is being persuaded into confessing to witchcraft herself.
But then an interesting thing happens; as soon as Tituba confesses, she isn’t whipped, hanged, or even chastised. She is blessed and applauded. And as quickly as Tituba begins naming other people as witches, it takes all of the focus off of her, and she is praised as in instrument in god’s hands concern save them all. For that reason, Abigail concludes that if she can confess to witchcraft, and implicate other people of being witches that made her do it instead, she not just won’t get in trouble for what she did, however she would have been likewise be applauded and adored.
Then, you can’t reject that Abby seems to be a little bit of a drama queen who likes attention. Although being whipped and having all the attention of the town where a few of the reasons for Abigail to do the things that she did, perhaps the single essential action was that she wished to retaliate on Elizabeth Proctor. Abigail utilized to be the servant in the Proctor’s family, however as Elizabeth finds out that John Proctor had an occult affair with Abigail, she fired her.
Abigail started implicating people to whom she had a terrific bitterness against; this will build up her implicating reputation, so that when she lastly navigates to implicating Elizabeth it will be credible. If she did only accused Elizabeth, that would be too suspicious, however if Elizabeth is simply one of many wicked witches in town, nobody will truly observe it as anything different. All of these factors result in Abigail being a ringleader of one of the most notorious gangs of accusers in American history.
And although it sounds incoherent to us in this point of time, it was something of severe significance to them; as they were very religious individuals, they were Puritans. Twenty individuals were performed, but a tragic hero, John Proctor, put an end to the hysteria by being a sincere and a nonconformist individual. By his rejection to admit, he appeared his nerve, his hostility to lies, and his morality to everybody in the town, that he was a goody guy.
