Oscar Pistorius; I Blame Myself for Taking Reeva’s Life Link: http://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/pistorius-trial/oscar-pistorius-i-blame-myself-taking-reevas-life-n79746 The article was about Oscar Pistorius trial for the death of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. He is now undergoing trial for murder. According to Pistorius, it was an accidental shooting because he mistook his girlfriend for an intruder and fired four times with his 9 mm pistol through the toilet door. If convicted, Pistorius faces a 25 year to life imprisonment for premeditated murder. I can only cringe in sympathy with Pistorius for what he is going through right now. First, he has to deal with the guilt of killing his girlfriend of which he blames himself “because he got a fright” that he never intended to take his girlfriend’s life. Second, he has to deal with the prosecution and prison sentence of 25 years to life if he is found guilty of premeditated murder. And lastly, he has to deal with public scrutiny because the trial is publicized around the world. He did not only lose his girlfriend but also his privacy and possibly, earning the wrath of many people around the world. It is like, he against the world for accidentally killing his girlfriend. The news is credible not only because it used law terms such as cross examination, premeditated, and that the defense as well as the prosecution’s argument are presented. In addition, the actual coverage of the trial was shown (but is not record anymore because it is already over) for the viewers to see and hear the actual proceeding of the trial. The news cannot be more credible than that. Russian troops seize Crimea airbase as Moscow consolidates control Link: http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/03/22/us-ukraine-crisis-idUSBREA2K0MC20140322 The news is about the annexation of Crimea, a province of Ukraine by Russia. In this news, it is about the seizure of the Crimea airbase by Russian troops. Putin alleged that many of Crimean residents are of Russian root and they are annexing it to protect its citizens. As a backgrounder, this happened after the ouster of former Ukraine President _who ordered the killings of demonstrators after they protested the President’s agreement with Russia. Ukrainians wanted their future with European Union and not with Russia. At present, United States are threatening for more sanction against Russia with Putin just shrugging off the possibility of harsh sanctions. Putin’s troops however remain a threat to Ukraine. My thought here is that Russian President Vladimir Putin is clearly wrong because no matter how he argue it, invading another country’s province is wrong. He is behaving like Second World War Europe where countries will just invade any countries. He is also acting like a tyrant when he responded with annexation after Ukrainians no longer wanted to be with Russia but instead with European Union. The news is credible but we have to get it from reliable sources because when there are conflicts, the news is also used by the conflicting parties to win the heart and minds of the readers to get sympathy with their cause. The news however is vivid in projecting the possibility that conflict may erupt because Russian troops are just nearby the border and that conflict and crackdown may become a pretext for Russian invasion. Malaysian Airline MH370: search area too deep for robot Link: http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/malaysia-airlines-mh370-search-area-too-deep-for-robot-sub-1.2610338 The article is about the search operation of the Malaysian Airline MH370 which is believed to have crashed in the Indian Ocean. The multinational team is searching to recover the remains of the passengers as well as the black box of the airplane to finally have an answer to the mystery that surrounds the aircraft. The search proved to be difficult because the ocean floor is very deep for robot to reach in addition to the vast expanse of search coverage. This news is not only controversial but also very mysterious as well. There are a lot of unanswered questions that needs to be answered such as why did the pilot bring the plane to the Indian Ocean? Was it intentional or not? Was it hijacked or not or are there any terrorist aboard the plane that forced the pilot to crash it at Indian Ocean. I cannot also imagine the family members of the passengers who had been told a lot of things about the fate of their loved ones. This time, the news must be viewed with caution because there a lot of things unanswered. In addition, there were allegations of non-transparency with what happened in the aircraft before and that the authorities are hiding something. It is also possible that the authorities know more than what are telling us. Such, the news about MH370 must be read with caution and will be better to wait for the discovery of the black box and have the information contain in it to have a full picture of what really happened. As Ebola outbreak spreads vaccine remains years away Link: http://www.cbsnews.com/news/as-ebola-outbreak-spreads-vaccine-remains-years-away/ The news is about the outbreak of Ebola virus in Africa where scores of people already died. It is also feared that the virus might spread outside Africa. The Ebola virus is very deadly because there is no vaccine or cure for the virus yet that it is almost a certainty that anyone who would contract the virus will die. I am personally worried that if the virus will not be contained, it may spread around the world killing thousands if not millions of people. The virus is highly contagious and deadly and is transferable via human contact. This virus has also no cure and kills its victims within days. If we are scared about AIDS, we should be doubly scared about Ebola virus because unlike AIDS which has cocktails that can suppressed the virus, Ebola has no medicine like that and it is almost a guarantee that one will die if he or she will contract the virus. The news must be taken seriously. It is not just a news but also a sort of news bulletin because experts are also giving their precaution about the virus. Imagine in 3 weeks there are already 112 people dead and this is just in one area alone. The terms used were medical words and the ways they are phrased are expert opinion about the virus as well as educating us on how to take precaution against the virus. Read More
