Chapter 1
Holden is a 16 years of age young boy who has simply gotten expelled out of the expensive prep school Pencey Preparation for failing 4 out of his 5 topics (He passed English). He then goes to visit his old history teacher before he leaves
Chapter 2
Holden’s old history teacher, Mr. Spencer, is sick with the flu and Mr. Spencer lectures Holden about life and attempts to get him to think of the future. Holden gets extremely sick of this extremely quick, so he lies to Mr. Spencer and delegates his dormitory before supper starts.
Chapter 3
At his dormitory, Ackley, a very frustrating senior whose room is linked to Holden’s, intrude and declares that he dislikes Holden’s roommate, Stradlater. Holden defends his roomate even though Holden isn’t extremely fond of Stradlater himself.
Chapter 4
Stradlater arrives, and given that Holden has nothing else to do, Holden joins him in the restroom. Stradlater is preparing yourself for a date with a lady that Holden invested a summertime with 2 years earlier(Jane). Holden informs his roommate little quirks about Jane, however he doesn’t seem to care. Stradlater asks Holden to do a composition for him, while he’s out, but not too well since then his instructor will understand he didn’t do it. Stradlater leaves and Holden is delighted when Ackley comes back since it takes his mind off of Jane.
Chapter 5
Holden, Ackley, and another buddy, Brossard, all go out to the motion pictures but wind up consuming burgers instead. When they return Ackley informs Holden about a girl he made love with, however Holden knows he’s lying due to the fact that he tells the story differently whenever. Later, Holden chooses to compose the composition about a baseball mitt loaded with poems that belonged to his sibling, Allie, before he died of leukemia.
Chapter 6
Stradlater arrives and asks for the structure and is disturbed when he finds out its about a mitt. Holden rips up the essay. Holden begins smoking to irritate Stradlater and inquires about his date. Stradlater doesn’t give much info and they wind up in a fight. Holden winds up with a bloody nose and blood all over his clothing.
Chapter 7
Holden goes to Ackley’s space to get away from his roomie. Holden attempts to sleep in his room, however decides to run away from Pencey entirely, although he’s not enabled to leave till Wednesday. He decides he’s going to get an inexpensive hotel room in New york city till Wednesday.
Chapter 8
Holden strolls to the train in the snow and gets on. A little while later on, an older lady sits beside him on the train(Ms. Morrow). She is the mother of a snobby, frustrating kid at Pencey, however Holden lies stating he was the most popular kid in school. Holden even lies about his own name. Before the mom gets off the train, she welcomes him to their summer season home, however Holden lies again about his summer plans.
Chapter 9
Holden gets off the train and goes to a telephone cubicle. After thinking about a number of individuals to call (Phoebe, Jane and Sally), he chooses to call no one. Holden enters into a taxi and tries to make discussion with the driver, but fails. As soon as at the hotel, he calls a stripper and tries to go and have a cocktail with her, but fails also.
Chapter 10
Holden goes to the Lavender Room, a club in the hotel he’s staying at. He meets 3 older lady whom he dances with, however all seem boring in Holden himself.
Chapter 11
Holden is being in the hotel lobby while considering his summer season with Jane. Later he chooses to go to Ernies, a club he utilized to go to with his brother D.B.
Chapter 12
En route, Holden strikes a conversation with the cab driver, however the motorist gets upset very rapidly. At the club, Holden sits alone, however overhears 2 different conversations. Later On, Lillian Simmons, a woman that utilized to go out with D.B. asks Holden to join her and her boyfriend, but Holden lies about having to satisfy someone, and leaves.
Chapter 13
Holden goes back to the hotel and an elevator young boy (Maurice) asks him if he wants a prostitute for $5. Without thinking, Holden agrees. In his space, we find out that he’s a virgin and with his prostitute (Sunny), Holden chokes and not does anything. The lady requests for $10, but Holden just offer $5 and she leaves.
Chapter 14
Later, the elevator young boy knocks on the door demanding 5 more dollars. He punches Holden, and the lady takes the $5 from his wallet. They leave, and Holden remains on the flooring bleeding.
Chapter 15
Holden calls Sally Hayes and makes a date with her. After he goes to Grand Central Station and speaks with two nuns. He gives them a donation.
Chapter 16
Prior to meeting Sally, Holden buys his sister, Phoebe, a record. Holden also purchases tickets to a romantic show for Sally. Holden goes to the park to see if he can discover his sis. He asks a girl where she is and she states that Phoebe remains in the museum. Holden reminices about the museum and thinks about entering, but he doesn’t, and begins to get ready for his date.
Chapter 17
Sally and Holden go to the theater, and later go ice skating. Holden asks her to run away with him, however she decreases. Holden states she’s “a pain in the ass” which makes Sally cry and ends their date.
Chapter 18
Holden thinks about calling Jane, however instead calls an old buddy, Carl Luce, out to drinks. Prior to conference with Carl, Holden sees a film and gets disturbed when the lady beside him is extremely psychological.
Chapter 19
Holden goes to a bar with Luce and Luce states that he only has a number of minutes prior to he has to go. Holden starts bombarding Luce with concerns and Luce gets very disappointed. Luce leaves.
Chapter 20
After Luce leaves, Holden stays in the bar and gets extremely drunk. He calls Sally, and ultimately goes to the lagoon by Grand Central and regrets about Allie. Later, he decides that he’s going to slip into his own house to speak to his sibling, Phoebe.
Chapter 21
He sneaks into his own house to talk to Phoebe. She discovers that he got tossed out and keeps saying, “Daddy’ll eliminate you!”
Chapter 22
Phoebe asks Holden to state one thing that he wants to be and he merely states that he wishes to catch kids from falling off a cliff in a field of rye.
Chapter 23
Holden calls an old teacher, Mr. Antolini. They speak quickly. Later on, Holden’s parents show up and Holden hides in Phoebe’s closet. After, he leaves without his parents seeing.
Chapter 24
Holden goes to spend the night at Mr. Antolini’s house. He is really welcoming. In the middle of the night, Holden wakes up to find Mr. Antolini petting his head. Horrified, Holden leaves there as quickly as he can.
Chapter 25
Holden decides that he’s going to leave West and begin a new life, but he wishes to speak to Phoebe first. Phoebe firmly insists that she needs to feature him, however Holden changes his mind and decides to stay home.
Chapter 26
Holden specifies that he could state more about his life, but that he’s not in the state of mind. He ends his story by saying nobody ever understands what they’re going to carry out in life, and that he misses everyone that he discussed.
