Catcher in the Rye Tune
After looking at several songs and their lyrics, I discovered that the tune “The other day” by the Beatles represented well a few of Holden’s scenarios on The Catcher in the Rye. The song reveals the feelings Holden feels for Jane. In The Catcher in the Rye, Holden remembers the relationship he once had with Jane and how it was so simple, and how joy came so easily when he was with her. Like on page 79 of the novel, Holden says, “You never ever even stressed with Jane …
All you understood was, you were happy” The lyrics in the song also state “Yesterday, love was such an easy game to play.” It was so simple for Holden before, now he struggles to delight in relationships with women and he misses out on the past when love was only about moring than happy. The thought of Jane dating somebody else drives him crazy, so when he finds out that Stradlater was out with Jane, and that they were in Ed Bankey’s cars and truck together, he runs away from school alone. The line “Now I require a place to conceal away” in the tune represents that situation pretty well.
After Holden realizes that all the delighted times he had with Jane are in the past and always will be, he gets really unfortunate and wishes to conceal from the world, and he wants to hold on to his memory of “yesterday.” I believe that the tune “The other day” represents really well Holden’s sensations for the past when Jane and him were together. Yesterday by The Beatles The other day, all my difficulties appeared up until now away Now it looks as though they’re here to remain Oh, I believe in the other day
Unexpectedly, I’m not half the guy I utilized to be There’s a shadow hanging over me. Oh, I the other day came all of a sudden Why she needed to go I do not understand she wouldn’t say I stated something incorrect, now I long for yesterday Yesterday, love was such an easy video game to play Now I need a place to hide away Oh, I believe in yesterday Why she had to go I do not understand she wouldn’t state I said something wrong, now I long for yesterday The other day, love was such a simple video game to play Now I require a location to conceal away Oh, I believe in the other day
