Open discussion There are many things that a leader can do so that the rest of his or her staff will think of him or her as an honest and trustworthy leader. First of all, leaders need to have incredible self-motivation skills because they need to be an example to their employees. It is a well-known fact that leaders who are hard-working and self-motivated get increased output from their employees. In order to help achieve this, managers will need to have great customer service skills because they generally deal with other people most of the time.

If there is an argument that breaks out between a client and an employee, or even just between their employees and themselves, the manager will need to step in and show wisdom over the situation. One way to do this is by showing calmness and understanding so employees do not feel threatened with the possibility of being fired. Furthermore, a good manager or leader needs to be a team player. He or she has to put their own welfare aside and work for the good of the team. This could involve working with people who are above them in the food chain and also those who they are in charge of.

In order to be able to do this, a manager or leader will have to be knowledgeable about the industry that they are in. If they do not seem clued-up about the day-to-day operations of the business, then they will not be able to lead efficiently. Finally, a good manager or leader has to have an optimistic attitude because there will be many challenges that crop up. If the manger has a positive outlook about their work, then it is inevitable that the employees of the workplace will also feel this way.

This in turn will result in higher rates of productivity, low turnover rates, and employees with high satisfaction. Above all, a great manager or leader will need to have good public speaking skills because he will be required to give and take orders depending on who he is talking to. On the other hand, a bad example of a manager or leader is one who acts as a dictator—he or she makes all the decisions themselves, without consulting any of his or her employees to receive feedback. In addition to this, these types of leaders fail to communicate effectively and, as a result, do not get the required output that they expect.

If they do happen to get their point across, they do not make themselves clear enough to be understood. Also, these leaders discipline employees when it is not always the best option. A simple warning would be enough in some cases. Additionally, these managers take credit for the successes and accomplishments of other employees. Conversely, whenever anything goes wrong these types of leaders are never to blame, which shows a complete lack of responsibility. Last but not least, bad managers fail to recognize employees who deserve praise and maybe even a promotion.

This results in unhappy employees who do not feel like going the extra mile for their manager or leader. One time, I was nominated as the group leader for a group assignment for one of my university courses. In order to keep control of the group, I delegated tasks for each member to be responsible for. This resulted in group members that trusted me and were willing to do anything extra. These members were allocated group roles depending on their personality type. For example, those who were more extroverts were given the task of creating a presentation for our group.

On the other hand, those who were more hands-on were given the responsibility of working directly on the group project, conducting their own research to see what would work well and not so well. The key thing from this was that the group developed a respect for my leadership style because I first respected them.
