Running Head: Five Areas of Coaching Five Areas of Coaching of the or College The paper insistson five areas of coaching necessary for John to cope up with integrated matrix model. The five areas and the aspects coach should concentrate on to make John an able person in communicating with other departments is crucial and forms the core of the paper. In each area, the nature of John is mentioned and coach’s role in mentoring him according to the needs in work place as well as family is discussed according to content available in authentic resources. Case Study The person (Mr. John) selected for case study in this paper is a Team Leader in a content development company. The work of the company involves content development for Educational Institutions, Websites, Writers and Publishers. It furnishes content for advertisement companies and other agencies like tourism related organizations. Hence, John’s job involves supervising content development works in the project he monitors. The projects he works on differ from time to time as the company needs to furnish content for travel agencies to educational institutions and even for Movie making organizations. The company used to follow project team model that separates production department from other departments. As to cope up with the competition in the market the company is implementing integrated matrix model that compels the production department to work in tandem with other departments like marketing and finance. As John is not familiar with this model, he is not able to communicate with other departments as well as human resources department and he is not able to get enough people to work on the projects he is in charge of. As he is expert in dealing with the people working under him he is not able to communicate or coordinate with the people who are equal in designation to him and some people who are superior to him. In the previous system he used to work with his subordinates for more time and communicate with peers and superiors for less amount of time and that suited his mentality and nature. However, now being unable to communicate with peers and superiors he is finding less time to spend with his wife and children. Hence, he fears that the future may result in spending less time with his family. In addition to that he is scared of being successful in the company as he is in the past. The paper outlines the work and idea of coach of John on five areas; Personal Care, Couples, Family and Friends, Work and Community. John is a bachelor in Literature and has a diploma in management. He worries about the limitations of his qualifications. Personal Care Personal care is most important in coaching as personal life and habits lead to the behavior at work place thus it compels a coach to take care about personality of the client like John. According to Frederick Hudson (1999), the adult coaching is burgeoning field as guiding individuals according to the needs of organizations and personal life is difficult for any coach to coordinate the different activities is complex. In bringing wisdom, compassion and humor in the coaching, a coach needs to be able to touch people with new possibilities and professional situations (Hudson, F, 1999). According to Rogers Jenny (2004), Coach of John should inject into him that what we do is what we most want to learn and that leads to self development and can help in overcome the fear regarding his qualification as his peers and superiors have much more academic qualifications than him. According to Mc Adam Stuart (2005), the process by which the coach uses reasonable listening and questioning skills to work with his client involves personal care of client by coach. I t is important in executive coaching. Taking personal care is important in coaching as it differentiates itself from training of executives. The personal care helps in achieving the full potential of individuals. As a coach is an outsider who can provide a means, the individual context of the client is important for coach to emphasize on aspects of both counseling as well as coaching. The counseling offered by coach to John in the area of personal care can decide the make or break of coaching in the future. The personal care taken in the course of coaching that involves emotional and logical responses of the client will enable the coach to take care of not forgetting the original terms of reference by the client that helps him professionally. While taking personal care, the time and resources available for coach in coaching John is important as his time available as well as resources regarding education are limited. The coach can prompt him to learn while doing if he is able to take care of his personality as well as his personal commitments. In addition to above aspects, personal care like talking about family aspects combined with professional issues can help coach to achieve quality in his performance to mould or transform the client like John (Rogers, Jenny, 2004). Couples As an additional benefit for John other than personal care in coaching, it is important to have life coaching to improve performance at office as well as at home. Hence, John needs a coach who can coach individuals as well as couples and groups. The coaching of couples can be divided into two groups and John needs to select a partner, with whom he is not able to communicate at office and at home his life partner will be a partner in implementing coaching aspects. In other terms in coaching of couples, the coach will help John to implement self coaching techniques. Apart from reading books John can have phone sessions with coachers at prescribed periods to have coaching regarding life skills that involve couples. According to Nelson Jones and Richards (2006), in training that involves couples active listening will be a central skill to develop and maintain coaching relationships and coach should be ready to listen to at least three persons when he is coaching John regarding couples at office and home. Then the coach should try to control bodily cues and social sensitivities of John at office and home communication. By listening to John and his partners at office and home, coach should be able to understand him and his situation that helps John to establish rapport, trust and gaining greater understanding with his office partners and to balance time with his family members (Nelson-Jones, Richard (Author), 2006). Family and Friends After coaching aspects of couples are implemented, the aspects regarding family and friends should be part of the couples coaching or can be treated as a separate area. The family and friends aspect of coaching helps in bringing out emotional intelligence of John, which is crucial to communicate with peers and superiors of other departments and teams. The emotional aspect of the intelligence helps in understanding peers and superiors of other departments and treats the people working on the project reasonably. In addition to that emotional intelligence decides the leadership qualities of John and family as well as friends decides the level and nature of emotional intelligence. According to Wall Bob (2006), a team leader should deal with his subordinates in a manner that defines the role of employee in the process and in a manner of understanding the compulsions of production as well as marketing departments. The way John deals with his subordinates also depends on his attitude and that depends on family and friends that influence him a lot. If John is the person who can influence his friends and family, coach can least bother about this aspect of coaching. However, in the case study it has been observed that John is not able to work in integrated matrix model that needs attitudes to communicate. Hence, coach of John needs to concentrate on family and friends aspects of John and should mould him accordingly that enables him to influence them in case of their wrong expressions (Wall Bob, 2006). Work After the clearance of wrong expressions in office and the family, John’s coach should concentrate on the working aspects of his client. According to case study, John is suffering with the problem of facing integrated matrix model in the organization and the challenges in work due to that model. Inherently, he has a feeling that he is having only a bachelor degree and is afraid of his academic knowledge that helps in completing the projects. According to Connor Mary (2007), the first thing coach has to do is that he should make John to trust that coach believes in him. Then he can emphasize on self confidence of John about gaining knowledge while doing work and the necessity of anybody to learn to meet the new challenges of work as changing times demand. To make John cope up with the problems he is facing in work, coach should insist on principle of learning and enables him to share knowledge, values, attitudes, skills and experience. With learning relationship the context should be work place and coach should set a resourceful agenda. According to learning environment and resourceful agenda, coach can facilitate development as the outcome and change. When the outcome is development in work, that change can provide direction for client and the development of skills in the above context can release potential of John to deliver results (Connor Mary, 2007). Community The last and fifth aspect will be community and coach should review and correct the confrontations of John with his community in office. The main problem of him is to communicate with peers and superiors in his office as part of the strategies of integrated matrix model of business. In this part John should have an idea of financial, human resources and marketing aspects of business. Previously he used to have idea about developing content and deliver. But now he should consider the problems and ease of finance and human resource departments in giving him enough resources and the abilities of marketing department to bring him work. Hence, he should utilize the learning and mentoring issues he has developed in the course of coaching and it is necessary to consider the different departments of his office as a community. Then he can deal with them according to knowledge he gains from continuous learning activities in the course of coaching. The community approach to the work place and business house motivates the client and gives him recognition and praise he/she deserve. Coaching is the process of using that wisdom to help employees experience and work through the changes required of them. The change mentioned above will change the style of John from authoritarian nature to inclusive approach that is necessary for integrated matrix model (Hendricks, William (Editor), 1996).
