Extract of sample "A Clean, Well-Lighted Place by Ernest Hemingway and The Jewelry by Guy de Maupassant"

Maupassant’s story was so memorable because it is true today as it was during his time, that people can be just as hypocritical. The poems, the more memorable ones are “Facing It” by Yusef Komunyakaa and “We Wear the Mask” by Paul Laurence Dunbar, because of their courage and outspokenness at a time of bigotry and racial hatred. Sometimes, I mentally place myself in their shoes, and I am unsure whether or not I could be as brave as them. Because of their writings, our literature is richer and lessons of history better preserved for generations to come.

Yes, I had shared my assigned readings with friends and family, and they were visibly touched by some of these.

The framework of the literary analysis is specific and highly structured.  I also found it difficult to write critiques about my classmates’ writings, because it is so easy to praise, however, we were told specifically not to praise but to criticize, and so I felt sometimes my reactions might have been harsh.  Because I had to think critically, I feel I had changed as a writer because I began to think and write more analytically and at the same time more sensitively.
