The purpose of this chapter is to provide insight into critical factors affecting the nursing profession in stem cell research and to review the history of the ongoing ethical debate on the use of embryonic stem cells, with a special focus on nursing practices. In addition to historical evaluation, this chapter includes opposing views and bioethical concerns regarding stem cell research in terms of its validity, ethics, and current trends in connection with nursing. The organization of the chapter is thematic, with separate sections focusing on particular aspects of stem cell research ethical controversy, different dimensions of its impact on the nurses’ profession, and the consequent beliefs and attitudes held by them, as is shown by existing research.

The literature review for this proposed study was completed through an extensive search through multiples databases and approved government websites to explore the past and current data on ethical considerations, issues, and policy in stem cell research. The initial search began with a broad spectrum of topics that focused on general ethical issues in stem cell research that transitioned to the specific perspective of nursing ethics in clinical practice and research. There were 3,310 searches completed for researching the bioethics of nursing experience working in stem cell research that included 198 articles on stem cell research.

Peer-reviewed articles, journals, periodicals, doctoral dissertations, and scholarly book reviews were obtained through, PubMed, ProQuest, EbscoHost, GalePowerSearch on bioethical issues in stem cell research, nursing ethics in the clinical environment, nursing status on stem cell research, and nursing organizational policy on stem cell research. The literature review search included the history of stem cell research here in the United States, bioethical issues, pro-choice groups, the question of the embryo; when does life begin, in vitro fertilization, stem cell commercialization, nursing code of ethics, ethics education in nursing schools and ethical discourse in the clinical environment. A total of 552 peer-reviewed referenced scholarly works were used for this proposed qualitative case study. The following table shows the books, journals, and websites from which the title search was completed. (Please see table below).
