The study is about a big film studio that is based in the United States of America between the period of 1936 and 1965 (Miller & Shamsie, 1996). The article shows how financial performance of the firms depended on the contracts that were signed with American theaters and the superstars. The stable financial performances led to the stable and predictable environment between 1936 and 1950 (Miller & Shamsie, 1996). This article also analyzes the difference that exists between the property based resources and the knowledge-based resources. The further analysis states that the resources that are based on the property are believed to provide long-term stability to the environment, and the resources that are based knowledge can only be used in unpredicted situations or uncertain environment. Context The article tries to explain the best methods that can be used by readers to attain sustainability of business organizations. The article explains different approaches that can be applied by the readers to research and analyze the views that are based on resources to help in the creation of a broader understanding of the concepts discussed. This is not the only article about the topic, but Danny Miller has written other related articles to help in widening the knowledge of the readers on such concepts discussed in this article (Miller & Shamsie, 1996). Process The study was conducted on major film studios in Hollywood that existed in that period. The research was conducted on film studios like the MGM, Warner Brothers, and Columbia, Paramount plus the other major film companies in the United States of America. Apart from that, there are also examples given by the author on how this kind of research can help. Apart from providing the methods, the author of this article also shows the readers the bad side of shop-floor culture. The disadvantage of this information is that it underpins and lowers the overall and creative humor that currently witnessed in factories (Collinson, 1988). Reflective essay Introduction There are a lot of benefits that are connected to the review of the two articles by Collinson and Miller. The article by Miller and Shamsie shows several methods that can be used by organizations to beat their competitors and stay on top of the market (Miller & Shamsie, 1996). The article by Collinson, on the other hand, introduces the concept of shop-floor humor; it also highlights the three aspects of the culture in every organization. The article helps the readers in understanding all the concepts of the resource based on assets that would help in bringing the stability of the organizations particularly on the ones that operate on predictable settings. Similarly, this article will also be of use to organizations during uncertain situations if resources based on knowledge method are applied (Collinson, 1988). The authors of the articles did not use catching topics on the articles in that whoever has no idea on what is entailed in the articles can never desire to read what is inside. These two articles offer fresh information on the ways that business could be managed. A literature review of these two articles has assisted me in broadening my knowledge on the issues of making contracts. The article by Collinson has assisted me broadening my knowledge on the issue of shop-floor humor. Initially, I used to believe that there was nothing negative concerning humor at any work place not until I read this article. Most people believe that there are only positive issues that are connected to the interrelation of employees of any given organization (Field, 2009). The article by Millerand and Shamsie is a bit complicated, and it needs a lot of concentration to understand the contents of the article especially on the Research Based Views. There is need to do a lot of studies and consultation to understand its contents (Miller & Shamsie, 1996). There is other articles and research done by other scholars that could elaborate the article further. The other articles help in elaborating the competitions those firms in an oligopoly market (Feng, et al, 2014). After understanding these competitions then the article will assist in analyzing the best ways on how to emerge on top of all these competitors. Understanding the situation of an organization’s situation will assist the top managers on whether to use the resources by property or on the basis knowledge. According to the article by Millerand and Shamsie any organization that can be able to differentiate the two will be able to create different values, assets by knowledge and property (Miller & Shamsie, 1996). In the process of reading the two articles, I realized that some hidden phrases and concepts needed elaboration outside the two articles this helps in widening knowledge on the topic of discussion. To fully understand the Collinson article, there were other articles for instance “The Use of Humor in the Workplace” helped in elaborating the article further (Mesmer-Magnus, et al, 2012). There a lot of dangers that are connected with the humor at the workplace and these dangers are one of the examples of negative effects that people might experience in the workplace. Upon reading other articles to further my knowledge on the topic, I realized that the author shared a lot of sentiments with other researchers who published articles trying to elaborate the topic. The article by Collinson analyzes ways through which employers use humor to control their employees in the organizations that they head (Lyttle, 2007).I believe that there a lot of readers out there who would also not believe this theory of humor and if it can bring negative or positive effects in an organization (Harvey, et al, 2016). The two articles can never help a reader to complete his research without visiting other articles. All the articles must be studied together with other articles to come up with a clear conclusion. The two authors could have used simple and plain language in analyzing the concepts and the theories that exist in these two articles. Following the topics that the writers have used it would be hard to believe that such topics could contain such information. In most occasions readers always set their mind following the topic sentences of an article or a book, it, therefore, makes it hard to switch the mindset in the middle of the reading. The theories that have been used by the authors are somehow related to life experiences. Just like in business organizations life is full of uncertain situations. The study will, therefore, help me come up with solutions on matters that I face in my life rather than in the organization. Similarly, the knowledge also broadens the understanding in that readers will be able to understand that the resources that are in every organization help in building stability of a firm depending on the type be it property based or knowledge based (Ismail, et al, 2012). The articles state that the stability and the success of an organization do not depend on the size. Conclusion The articles have broadened my understanding of how to critically review and analyze articles without much problem. It is important to note that in a matter of article review, the readers should concentrate on the objectives of the article being reviewed. Another thing is that before reviewing any article, the reader should approach with an open mind instead of a fixed mindset.
