 Marriott has a vision to be one of the best hospitality companies in the world in variety of aspects. They work to achieve their vision by perennially providing a high level of services and customer care to their patrons. They understand well about moral obligation by caring their employees, and this builds a great reputation for Marriott. One of the ways that the Marriott brand achieve such a level of satisfaction, both among its employees and its clients, is by making the employees feel like one part of the Marriott family. This is done in many ways; however, the liberal benefits that the employees of the brand earn are one of the biggest ways that this is affected. As a payback to the company, Marriott’s employees provide great service and satisfy Marriott’s customers; thereby providing a type of symbiotic relationship. Marriott’s mission thereby works to lead a company-wide approach to their vision. This is but one of the reasons why Marriott is able to provide effective progress to be the best hospitality company in the world and create a public perception that this company builds their corporation in positive ways. Success of Marriott in the hospitality world does not come only from the dedication of their employees however. Besides showing a great deal of concern for these shareholders, Marriott is an innovative corporation. In this way, the firm follows the trend of the recent innovations and technological changes in the current world. By being flexible to transform their regulation and company regulation based on the recent global economic situation, hospitality trends, and behaviors of the employees, the firm has stayed fresh whereas others have faltered. The board of the directors of Marriott believes that world is changing, thus Marriott has to follow suit if it intends on staying competitive. After doing research on final presentation in my ethics class, there were a great deal of interesting facts concerning Marriott; however, for purposes of this paper, this author will be addressing but two of these major positive factors in detail. Additionally, a scandal will also be discussed. In addition, besides discussing those positive factors that have briefly been referenced above, my group research shows Marriott has committed into fraud scandal. First of all, the very basic aspect of building a big company is encouraging their workers to put their best on doing jobs. Employees’ can do effective jobs if it’s followed by passion from their heart.” When you are good at something, passionate, and work even harder to excel and be the best at it, good things happen”(Mark Cuban 2012), and not working only for receiving wages. Company will have a solid foundation to be one of the best companies in long term if they are able to lead their workers to work with all of their passion. This is extremely important, because employees who work because of their love of working in such companies will doubtless give positive impacts for the firm in question. They will provide better services which will in turn lead to more satisfied customers. This automatically will increase the profit of the company and make the corporation stronger. Marriott has a great success in leading their workers to value duty of loyalty at their highest level for Marriott. It is due partly to the fact that the Marriott brand seeks to understand and implement what can only be described as a type of moral obligation. They care their employees and this makes Marriott’s workers feel as if they are one part of the Marriott family. Marriott provides their employees, health care, health insurance, English as a second language training, and an array of other benefits. This is why many individuals want to work for this corporation. Based on the reviews of the employees who have or currently work for the company, some commented “I like working for Marriott, I think it is a great, because Marriott provides us a lot of benefits, and they are well known company with a positive image. I think there is good potential for growth within this company” (Jobitorial 2009). This means besides the workers loving being one of the parts of the Marriot family, they also have a positive image of the brand’s place within society. These aspect are very crucial for a company, and in my perspective, Marriott has accomplished this first fundamental elements of a company. It is very easy to build the company to a stronger if the company has a high level of good teamwork. Teamwork is the starting point of building a solid relationship between coworkers and I believe that Marriott has begun the necessary steps toward nurturing such a process. Firstly, they realized that teamwork takes an important role in the society and this is why today they are one of the biggest hospitality companies in the world. Caring about their employees is only one part of their stellar success in the hospitality business; likewise, the leadership system in Marriott also matters. Not like Enron who adopted a “dictatorship” style of management where Enron’s boards of directors dictated every decision that would guide the company without considering employees aspiration, Marriott takes quite a different path. By way of contrast, even though some people believe that democratic leadership in big company is not effective, such is most certainly not the case. Marriott, as one of the biggest names in the hospitality and employees just such a style of management. Furthermore, this style has proven to work exceptionally well for Marriott brands. As such, the firm always maintains good communication between each division because they adopt the democratic leadership style which encourages shareholder input. This corporation hears, and considers the aspirations, and ideas from their employees before they take key decisions that would affect their shareholders. This means that the Marriott leadership tries their best to take decisions that are able to satisfy their employees in general. This aspect helps them to maintain internal stability. Every company needs stability. Says Schein, “The strength and degree of internal consistency of a culture are, therefore, a function of the stability of the group” (Schein 1990). Stability is one of the crucial aspects of Marriott in order to pursue their vision to be one of the best hospitality companies in the world. Thus this democratic leadership helps them to maintain their company stability because the decisions, which can satisfy their shareholders, will decrease the conflict in their company. This democratic leadership style can unite the Marriott employees to have one vision to build this company to reach their company goals. In my opinion, the combination of Marriott taking care their employees, and democratic leadership styles are two great key success points for this company. Furthermore these points help to highlight the fact that the Marriott brand takes very seriously their mission to provide great services for customers by considering their workers. Nevertheless, I have never heard a big company that never had conflict, or scandal before. Prior to becoming a successful company, Marriott itself was no stranger to scandal. Besides the positive image that Marriott has in caring for its employees as well as their democratic system, Marriott previously had a bad history on tax shelters scandal. At such a time, Mitt Romney was one of the Marriott boards of directors. Obviously one of the key actions of leadership is to attempt to boost profitability. Mitt Romney attempted to do this by reducing Marrriott’s tax burden by up to 90%. At that time, the other board of directors agreed to follow Romney’s method because they thought that his plan was brilliant. They of course did not realize that the IRS would later recognize their scandal and expose it (Politicol 2012). Even though this activity was the idea of Mitt Romney, Marriott had a big portion to deal with the issues this created within the company. The entire tax shelter burden first weighed on the Marriott brand long before they sought to address this scandal to Mitt Romney. Even though they ever committed a tax shelter scandal before, they slowly sought to overcome this issue. It is normal for a big company that may commit scandals or illegal activities to rapidly seek to repair its image. Similarly, the bigger the company is then the bigger probability that they would get into more and more complex and costly legal entanglements. Marriott is not a small company that “The Corporation, which incurred no expense and sustained no losses because of the shoot, neither asked for nor expected any payment” (Kidder PLACE YEAR OF PUBLICATION HERE). For me it is normal that Marriott has a scandal in its past and it provides the firm the opportunity to learn from its mistakes and seek to provide a better quality to the customer and to the system in the future. There are a lot of moments, facts, issues, positive things, and negative aspects, which have contribution to building the Marriott brand. The two biggest, and the most valuable, aspects that continue to define the firm in a positive light is the fact that they care for their employees. By providing many benefits for employees who work in Marriott as well as showing concern for the personal development and growth of their shareholders, the firm represents a unique response to the way that most corporate entites operate. Also the leadership style is fit to lead this company into a better direction. The democratic style of leadership makes the employees feel as part of one family because they feel that Marriott hears them before the decision is made. The Marriott workers can express their aspirations and ideas in freedom. Furthermore, on the negative side they have a history of committing tax fraud; which they still working to finish the issue with IRS. Besides those negative facts, in my opinion, Marriott can be one of examples for other hospitality companies.
