Anthropology Book Review The New Jim Crow emanated from the US in 1960 from Jim Crow. The book written by Alexander Michelle is about the current levels of incarceration in the US which stands at 5% of the whole population in the world. In addition to this, the book highlights the incarceration of the African-American and Latino men stating that currently US is incarcerating 25% of the world’s prisoners (Michelle Alexander pg 25). This mainly targets the black men who are branded as felons and are trapped in the second class status which is difficult to escape.

With the civil rights movements ending in 1960, the US has embarked on criminal justice and war on drugs to target black men and Alexander argues that this is discrimination and repression. Twerking is assumed to be a lot of booty action which has earned pretty bad comments from the society. The twerking idea is a reflection of a larger system of cultural appropriation, commodification, and sometimes exploitation which has ended up giving rise to the new generation of the ratchet culture. Ratchet is therefore an umbrella name that associates with the poor people, and specifically poor women with poor linguistics, cultural practices, and stylistic life.

How did the Jews become white is a book focusing on racism about the US. The author Brodkin Karen says that racial inferiority has managed to be ascribed to the waves of immigrants only when they were used as unskilled labor. She specifically points out how the Jews after World War II started speaking American English and adopted the intellectual life in America ending up contrasting themselves with the culture of mythic blackness. In addition to this, the author argues that the Jew who lived in New York in a time when Jews were not white have misplaced priorities.

The author repeats the theme of racial discrimination all over the book citing the reason behind American capitalism on people not considered original Americans. The term black and minority ethnic is most commonly used to describe all people who are not white British. These words are not used in the US and the term African American is commonly used. Cowden in their book multiculturalism highlights this issue. The authors of this book are highlighting cases of multiculturalism in all aspects like education, economy and social life.

The book further analyses multiculturalism in relation to socioeconomic gap. Wherever there is a fight by Elaine Elinson and Stan Yogi is a human rights activist book that is written with the aim of fighting for the rights of workers, immigrants, gay rights and the rights of the disabled. The book gives a chronological history of the California civil liberties. The book is a concept developed from the speech delivered by Tom Joad who is a character from John Steinbeck’s novel the Grapes of Wrath who fights for the rights of the farmworkers.

The book does not fail to mention the expulsion of the Chinese communities who lived in California during the 19th century. Their expulsion showed the white supremacy and economic competition and exploitation which have repeatedly led to many Californians undermining the civil liberties of minorities. The book further analyzes the relentless constitutional fights in California that has ended up with a California for all Americans slogan leading to equality. Works CitedMichelle Alexander.
